Star of redemption

By Atok Dan

On this day, a star shone in the east,
in the East of the Nile
it was the star of redemption,
nay did anybody bother to comprehend the star,
it was on June 23rd of 1945 that a star illuminated  a cattle camp,
in the village of Wangulei,
an icon glowed in the land of oppressed
none did anyone adore the coming of Garang De Mabior on the land
who was born
to liberate the suppressed masses of the South of Sudan

For nobody visited the star,
not even  wise men of East
in the Bible
it was a star among the oppressed
the star of the mission

Oh the oppressed people, did we build a monument for him,
in our hearts
to remind us of the struggle,
of beautiful generations that perished,
in the struggle,
whose blood cemented the foundation of the nation,
Oh, land of long oppressed masses,
where did an icon live?
in the bushes of struggle
Oh freed masses,
where did the star die, in the bushes of struggle

Oh, on June 23rd who gave?
Oh, July 30th of 2005, why did you give us tears?
of unfinished business, why did you take him,
leaving us in skid row,
were you a bad day,
were you a day cursed,
for the oppressed shall hate you

Oh, disciples of the icon,
oh living heroes and heroines of the struggle
where did we put the agenda?
did we misplace it,
 the guiding star of liberation,
the yellow star,

Oh corruption, did you rob us
oh V8 of Japan,
why did you impoverish us?
you robbed our gallant heroes,
The men that led the struggle,
You robbed them
Oh June 23rd, shall you give us again
the star of justice, equality, and progress,
oh expecting mothers,
the custodians of life,
an icon had left
for we still need the likes
the follower of the star
